Slowburn vs Character.AI and Janitor AI
Last updated 2026-10-10.
Most people find us after a few months somewhere else. Here is what changes when you move, plainly, including the parts where we are not the better pick.
What is Slowburn, in one paragraph?
A site for long-form roleplay. You play a persona, the AI plays a character, and the story runs for hundreds of messages across chapters without the character forgetting who it is or who you are. Most sites are built for quick chats with a huge cast. We built for one story you keep coming back to.
How is Slowburn different from Character.AI?
Character.AI is the biggest name in the space, with an enormous character library and a strict content filter. If you have had a scene cut off mid-sentence, or a villain turn polite on you, you know the filter.
Slowburn is adults only. The content policy is a short list of hard lines, not a filter that flinches at dark or romantic stories. Inside those lines, the story goes where you take it. And the replies are written to read like prose, not like a text thread.
How is Slowburn different from Janitor AI?
Janitor AI has one of the largest open character libraries around. Its free built-in model is fine for casual chats, and a lot of people get the quality they want by connecting their own API key from an outside provider, which means setup and a separate bill.
On Slowburn the good models are the default. There is nothing to configure before your first message, and most of the voices are open on the free plan. If you already have a model key and prefer it, you can still point the chat at it.
Will it remember my story?
That is the whole point of the site. The chat history is exact until a long chapter folds its oldest messages into summaries, and alongside it the character keeps memories: things you set up front, and things that stuck as you played. They carry across chapters and sessions.
You can see them, too. A story’s Memories tab shows what the character holds, and lets you edit, lock, or merge any of it. Most sites keep that in a black box.
Is it actually free?
Yes. Fifty messages a day on the free plan, resetting daily, with full content, unlimited characters and stories, and the same memory. Paid plans add more messages, longer replies, and an extra voice. The first time you hit the daily limit you get three days of a paid plan on the house, no card and nothing to cancel.
Where do the bigger sites still win?
Honestly, a few places. Our library is smaller, because we are newer. Fifty messages a day is a real cap, where some sites let you chat loosely all day on free. There is no app store app yet; you install Slowburn from the browser. And the site is in beta, built by two people, so some edges are still rough.
If you want to bounce between a hundred characters in an evening, a bigger site may suit you better. If you want one story that builds, start one here.
How do I bring a character over?
Import the card. When you make a character, Import takes the .png or .json card you exported from Janitor AI, Chub, or SillyTavern, and fills in the description and scenario for you. Then start a story with your persona. You can also write in a few memories up front so the character starts out knowing the history you had. The wiki walks through characters, personas, and memory in full.
